The origin of Shedden Pain Relief and Sports Medicine dates back only a short time to February of 2005 when my wife, Patty, was struck by a car. At first, the injuries did not seem serious. As the months progressed, the pain in her neck, head, and low back got worse. She became depressed, and memory became a problem. Coordination in her hands decreased (she is a wonderful pianist.) All testing was inconclusive and gave no obvious reason for her decline in functioning and activity level. Over the months and years, Patty was found to have a herniated disc in her neck, and three ruptured discs in her lower back. After surgery in both areas and intensive cognitive therapy, Patty had almost returned to her physical activities and was playing the piano again. Again, Patty was hit by a careless driver and her artificial disc was dislodged. As can be imagined, there was a significant amount of pain that could not be controlled by her medications.
During this time, I had some health problems that required me to retire from active practice as an Emergency Physician: during all of this, Patty and I had started a small clinic to keep us busy and keep doing something that we both loved: being of assistance to others and contributing to our community. What was noted, and sorely disappointed us, over this time was that there was not a medical practice dedicated to caring for the whole person with pain.
Patty and I changed the focus of the practice to be on one thing: to make a difference in the lives of people with chronic pain. We have been very challenged to bring and deliver whole-person pain treatment in a caring, positive, and nurturing environment.
In caring for patients like they are our friends and family, we hope to bring a supportive atmosphere that has warmth and respect that would be extended to our parents, sisters, brothers, and other loved ones. We attempt to individualize the care of each patient. We hope to give hope to those that feel hopeless.
Please be committed to this dream as we are continuing to improve and bring you the best care possible.
